UK riots: Trouble erupts in English cities

Sporadic violence has broken out in several cities around England, although London remains largely quiet with a heavy police presence on the streets.

However, disturbances have been seen in Manchester, Salford, Wolverhampton, Nottingham, Leicester and Birmingham with shops being looted and set alight.

Also on Tuesday, Londoners began cleaning up their city after a third night of riots, with a Twitter and Facebook campaign rallying people to the most damaged areas.

The online-driven clean-up campaign is partly a riposte to the way that social networking sites and BlackBerry messaging services have been used by rioters to organise the violence in London.

As of 10 August, 1.05PM Brisbane time, news sites are awash with live video footage, social media responses to the violence, along with much commentary as to what sparked the surge in violence, and what the unrest says about Britain's society today.
